Definition

Allopathic medicine refers broadly to medical practice that is also termed Western medicine, evidence-based medicine, or modern medicine. The term "allopathy" was coined in 1810 by Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) to designate the usual practice of medicine (allopathy) as opposed to homeopathy, the system of therapy that he founded. Homeopathy is based on the concept that disease can be treated with minute doses of drugs thought capable of producing the same symptoms in healthy people as the disease itself. Although allopathic medicine" was rejected by mainstream physicians, it was adopted by alternative medicine advocates to refer pejoratively to conventional medicine."
